Sponsored by ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, the leading advocacy prostate cancer organization, the Summit is the premier legislative conference for issues concerning prostate cancer patients, survivors and their families. Designed to help attendees learn how to be better activists on federal, state and local levels, the Summit also gives them an opportunity to meet with their elected officials on Capitol Hill to encourage support for prostate cancer research.

Trip highlights included presentations from Representatives John Barrow of Georgia and Cliff Stearns of Florida and Dr. Carolyn Best, Program Manager at the Department of Defence’s Prostate Cancer Research Program. And Meghan Buzby from the International Myeloma Foundation presented on oral chemotherapy access issues.

And, throughout the three-day event, Dr. Herrick was able to participate in breakout sessions on issues facing federal, State and local advocacy opportunities, and to explore ideas for expanding the influence of the prostate cancer advocacy community. Almost 300 meetings were held in that time to discuss the need for medical research funding and the importance of early detection.

On the final day, Dr. Herrick and more than 300 patients, survivors and patient advocates joined former NBA stars Kevin Grevey and Gus Williams for a Congressional reception.

Dr. Herrick’s trip was funded by the Kansas City Prostate Cancer Foundation, a local prostate cancer awareness organization that also sent another advocate, Dr. Phillip King. Dr. Herrick and Dr. King also attended the event last year, joining 180 advocates from 29 states to help recover $16M in cuts from the Prostate Cancer Research Program – the only cancer program the Department of Defence did not cut in 2011.
